New Bissau

Master’s Thesis titled « New Bissau »: Urban Project for Facilities and Infrastructure in the Guinean Capital

How can architecture reeducate citizens?
How can architecture help solve social and political issues?

The goal is to intervene on the « skeleton » of Bissau—its infrastructure—so that its inhabitants can identify with the urban facilities. Architecture cannot be reduced to a simple form; it must necessarily offer an experience of space. Space only gains meaning when it is experienced. Therefore, architecture can play a vital role, for instance, in fostering interactions between people, and more importantly, in educating citizens.

Architecture is a vast and complex discipline. A space is never a single entity; it is the site of multiple meanings: sight, touch, hearing, and even incompatible phenomena occurring within the same environment. It is important that buildings are not solely the result of their primary functions, but that they also take into account the surrounding city.
